Perpaduan Islam dan feminisme diadvokasikan sebagai "kepentingan feminis dan praktik yang diatur dalam paradigma Islam" oleh Margot Badran pada 2002. Para feminis Islam mendasarkan argumen mereka dalam Islam dan ajarannya, memperjuangkan kesetaraan penuh wanita dan pria dalam lingkup pribadi dan publik, dan dapat melibatkan non-Muslim dalam kepentingan dan debat. Feminisme Islam diartikan oleh para cendekiawan Islam lebih radikal ketimbang feminisme sekuler dan dilandaskan dalam kepentingan Islam dengan al-Qur'an sebagai kitab sucinya. Sebagai "mazhab pemikiran", gerakan tersebut dikatakan merujuk kepada sosiolog Maroko "Fatima Mernisi dan para cendekiawati seperti Amina Wadud dan Leila Ahmed".
